Muslim armies were also based around cavalry, the majority of whom were lightly armoured and highly skilled archers who would repeatedly ride to within 50-80 metres of the Franks, release their arrows and retreat. The impact of a mass of heavily armoured knights and their warhorses could be devastating, as Richard proved at the battle of arsuf in 1191 In Jonathon Phillip's ' The Crusades 1095-1204' he gives a pretty good brief summary of the various tactics used by Crusading Frankish Armies, and their Muslim counterparts.Ī typical Frankish army in the East was formed as follows: the core of the army was the knights (secular knights and those of the military orders), well protected by their chain mail, helmets and kite-shaped shields, and whose most effective tactic was the charge. However I think this can mostly be attributed to a number of non-military factors, that can't be adequately simulated by the M2 engine.Įqually though the ideas of heavily armoured Christian Knights fighting against more lightly armed Muslim cavalry is historically accurate. You are right however about a general lack of progress for Crusading armies. In fact I'd actually give the edge to the Mamluks due to their armour piercing mace, over the Feudal Knights sword. Mamluks and Feudal Knights have very comparable stats. With a bit of practice (and maybe a couple of defeats) you'll get the hang of them. If you do decide to go to war against other islamic factions, they are usually isolated from their allies enough to as to make it a 1 on 1 fight. Assuming that you are playing vanilla, you are safely snuggled away on the corners of the maps, with plenty of rebel cities to conquer. In the middle east, you also have alot more space to manuever. You'll often see infantry rout with one cav charge after a solid duration of missile harassment. Soften up enemy heavy cav with a few missile cav and then charge them with your general.
The jihads can also be used to make the other islamic factions declare war on a nation they are at peace with.Īlthough heavy cavalry may seem to be the be-all-end-all of Med II, light cav (missile units in particular), can be a game changer when you get the hang of them. The ability for imams to set a jihad lets you save a ton on upkeep and recruit a bunch of jihadi-mercs to bolster your armies. The islamic factions actually have some considerable advantages over the catholics in some areas.įor one, they don't have to answer to the pope or worry about excommunication. Think we missed one? Militarily, she begins the campaign in a reasonably capable position, but with a clear and immediate threat as Alaric leads his Visigoth armies into Roman-held Thracia and Macedonia… mere regions away from Constantinople itself.Click here to set your flair! Welcome to /r/TotalWar!Ī subreddit for all of those who love the Total War series. While the Western Roman Empire ails and withers, the Eastern Roman Empire is an economic powerhouse, and reaps the benefits of this through treasury interest and trade tariffs. However, the young Emperor Arcadius will have to negotiate barbarian threats, court intrigues, and the ever-present Sassanid menace to ensure that the last light of the Roman Empire continues to burn. The East has safely weathered the storm of barbarian migration, often by diverting them into the West. As a result, new trade networks and fiscal reforms fill its coffers, all run by a centralised bureaucracy and a powerful state church. The new administrative centre at Constantinople has allowed the Eastern Romans to replace the antiquated systems throttling the economy and enfeebling Rome’s Emperors.
